Yoga, more than just stretching

When someone tells another that they do Yoga, there are one of two reactions: It's either curiosity, or an eye roll and groan. The non-yoga crowd immediately think of skinny yoga pants and a Starbucks coffee cup in their hands. While yoga pants are very comfortable to wear, and a nice cup of coffee is always a delicious treat, there is so much more to the process.
Yoga, which originated in Ancient India and noted in the Vedas, is practiced today by Hindus and Buddhists alike. In a typical studio you might see a state of the Buddha or a Hindu God/dess. This is to get the yogis in a meditative state of mind, to get ready for a spiritual experience as well as a great stretch.
Pranayama, yogic breathing, is also central to a good practice. Learning when to breathe in and exhale during each move. This keeps your breath in line with your movements and keeps the energy flowing.
Sitting quietly and just simply being. The perfect way to begin and end each session. Just. Sit. Easy pose or thunderbolt (or other). Focus on abdominal and lower lung breathing. Get your hands in a mudra perhaps, to help settle your mind. If so inclined, ask your Higher Self or other spiritual guide for power during the session.
There is so much to gain from daily Yoga! If you allow it, you will become more relaxed during your daily grind and better able to conquer irritations.
Never give up. And never underestimate what you are capable of. Namaste.
